PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. The film contains millions of microscopic liquid crystal droplets suspended in a polymer matrix between two thin conductive layers. In its natural, unpowered state those droplets are randomly oriented — they scatter light and the glass appears frosted.
When low-voltage AC power is applied, the liquid crystals align uniformly and the glass becomes completely transparent in under one second. There are no moving parts, no motors, and no mechanical wear of any kind.products are manufactured to exacting tolerances.
In the powered-on clear state, Smart Glass Country film carries the lowest haze rating on the market — below 4%. That is imperceptible under normal viewing conditions. You will see no tint, no texture, and no milky quality. The film disappears entirely when powered, which is why it works so naturally in homes where unobstructed desert views are part of the property's value.
In the off state the film produces a clean, uniform white frost — visually identical to high-quality sandblasted or acid-etched glass. It does not show shadows or silhouettes. Privacy is complete, not approximate.
Importantly, over 70% of natural light still passes through in the frosted state. The room stays bright — the film diffuses and softens the light rather than blocking it entirely. If complete blackout is required for a specific application, smart film is not the right product and we will tell you that directly.

Yes — Smart Glass Country film blocks 99% of UV rays in both clear and frosted states. In Scottsdale, this protects flooring, furniture, art, and upholstery from sun-driven fading year-round. The Ultra film adds enhanced infrared (IR) rejection, which also contributes to measurable heat reduction in west- and south-facing rooms.
No glass replacement is required. Smart film is applied directly to the interior surface of your existing glass — windows, glass walls, shower enclosures, office partitions, skylights, and doors including sliding, swing, and folding configurations. Custom shapes including arched windows, circles, and triangles are available and can typically be trimmed on-site.
This is the defining advantage over electrochromic glass systems, which require complete glass unit replacement at six-figure material costs and months of lead time.
Yes. When switched to the frosted state, PDLC film creates an excellent rear-projection surface. This is a feature some clients use in home theaters and entertainment rooms — the same glass panel that provides privacy during the day becomes a projection screen at night. It is one of the more impressive secondary applications of smart film in a luxury residential setting.
Our standard Crystal and Ultra films are clear when powered ON and frosted when powered OFF — the preferred configuration for most residential applications because privacy is maintained automatically during a power outage.
Smart Glass Country does offer a reverse PNLC film (clear when OFF, frosted when ON) for specific use cases. This is a custom-order item. If your project requires reverse operation, raise it during your consultation and we will assess whether it is the right fit.
Yes. Smart film operates on low-voltage AC power controlled by a relay, which integrates natively into any professional home automation system. Control4, Savant, and Lutron RadioRA / HomeWorks all support relay-controlled loads — your smart film zones can be added to existing scenes, schedules, and keypads with minimal reprogramming by your AV integrator.
We coordinate directly with your automation team during installation to ensure wiring handoff is clean and zones are labeled correctly. You do not manage that coordination yourself.
Smart Glass Country film supports the full range of control methods available on modern automation platforms:
— Smartphone app (iOS & Android) via the controller's wireless module
— Physical wall switch or keypad — standalone or integrated into your existing system
— Handheld RF remote for simple zone control
— Voice command via Alexa, Google Home, or Siri through your automation system's bridge
— Scheduled scenes and timers — clear at sunrise, frost at sunset, or triggered by occupancy
— Smart door lock integration for access-controlled spaces
For clients without a whole-home automation system, a standalone wireless switch is the most elegant simple solution.
In a power outage the film defaults to its natural unpowered state — frosted and opaque. Privacy is maintained automatically. This is the intentional fail-safe for residential applications and requires no action from you.
Both. A single transformer can power up to 100 square feet of PDLC film. Panels can be wired together on one zone or independently on separate zones — depending on your preference and automation configuration. Most projects are zoned by room or glass grouping so you have granular control from your existing Control4 or Savant interface. Zone layout is included in your proposal before any work begins.
Every project includes a $1,150 electrical baseline covering the transformer/inverter (which converts standard 110V or 220V AC household supply to the low-voltage AC the film requires), wiring to each film zone, and the control relay or switch connection.
The film itself draws less than 5 watts per square meter. For context: 10 square meters of smart film consumes less energy than a single LED recessed light. For projects with multiple zones or complex routing, additional electrical labor may apply — this is scoped in your proposal before any work begins.
We handle all low-voltage wiring and controller installation as part of our standard scope. If your project requires a new dedicated circuit or panel work, we coordinate with a licensed electrician and include that cost in your project quote. You are never handed off mid-project to manage separate contractors yourself.
Yes — Smart Glass Country film and glass products are UL listed, the recognized independent safety certification for electrical products in the US market. Products also carry CE and RoHS certifications.
The operating voltage is low, the current draw is minimal, and the film generates no heat. It does not emit UV, does not off-gas, and is fully safe for all residential environments including bedrooms, bathrooms, and nurseries.
| Project Scope | Typical On-Site Time |
|---|---|
| Single room / 1–2 panels (under 60 sq ft) | 4–6 hours, one day |
| Standard project (~150 sq ft, 3–6 zones) | 1–2 days |
| Whole-home or large commercial (300+ sq ft) | 2–4 days, phased |
These timelines include film application, electrical wiring, transformer installation, relay/switch connection, and full commissioning. We do not leave a job site without every zone tested and performing in both states.
From signed proposal and deposit, typical lead time is 2–4 weeks. Smart Glass Country manufactures film to order — standard smart film orders are typically ready for dispatch within 10–21 days of purchase order.
Smart film is a rough-in coordination item. If conduit and low-voltage pathways are being built into walls, your GC needs our routing requirements before the walls are closed. We provide a one-page coordination document for your contractor at no charge. Confirming your install window at proposal stage — not after drywall is finished — is strongly recommended.
Phase one — Film application: All glass is cleaned and prepped. Film is precision-cut to specification, applied, and edge-sealed. Work areas are covered and protected; no adhesive, dust, or debris is left at day's end.
Phase two — Electrical: Transformer placement, low-voltage wiring to each zone, relay/switch installation, and handoff to your automation integrator.
Final commissioning: Every panel is tested in both states. You or your designer are walked through full operation. We do not close out a job until every panel performs to specification.
Smart Glass Country film is custom-cut to order with a standard maximum width of 72 inches (1,830mm) and length of 150 inches (3,810mm) per panel. Surfaces exceeding these dimensions are handled with seamed panels, detailed in your proposal. Custom shapes are trimmed on-site for most arched and non-rectangular configurations.
Smart Glass Country's official cleaning protocol — provided as a reference card at every installation:
- 1Power the film OFF before cleaning. Wait until completely dry before powering back on.
- 2Use a soft, lint-free microfiber towel dampened with isopropyl alcohol (70%).
- 3Apply to the cloth first — never spray directly onto the film surface.
- 4Wipe in straight, even strokes. Avoid pressure on the film edges.
- 5Ensure no fluid collects in the corners or along the film border.
- 6Never use ammonia-based cleaners (standard Windex), abrasive pads, metal tools, or saturating wet cloths.
For daily maintenance, a dry microfiber cloth handles fingerprints and dust without any liquid required.
This is the right question — lower-quality PDLC films do yellow under sustained UV exposure, and Arizona's UV index is among the highest in the country. Smart Glass Country Crystal and Ultra are engineered with UV-stabilized polymer matrices specifically to resist yellowing and optical degradation. Under correct cleaning practices and normal operating conditions, you should see no meaningful optical change over the warranty term. Any yellowing within the warranty period is a covered defect — not a cost you absorb.
Smart Glass Country products are rated for a minimum of 100,000 powered hours, equating to an average lifespan of 15–20 years under normal residential use. There are no scheduled maintenance requirements, no moving parts to service, and no components that wear on a predictable cycle.
Yes. Smart film blocks UV and IR radiation — the primary drivers of solar heat gain through glass. The Ultra film's enhanced IR rejection makes a measurable difference in reducing cooling load on west- and south-facing rooms, a real operational benefit in Scottsdale's summer months where air conditioning costs are significant.
| Warranty | What It Covers | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Desert Smart Glass Workmanship | Installation defects: edge lift, bubbling, improper adhesion, wiring or controller faults from our installation | 2 years from installation |
| Smart Glass Country Crystal | Film defects: delamination, yellowing, optical degradation, electrical failure of the film layer | 5 years from installation |
| Smart Glass Country Ultra | Same as Crystal, with enhanced coverage for UV-related optical changes | 7 years from installation |
Yes — Smart Glass Country requires warranty registration for all orders placed after March 1, 2022. We handle this registration on your behalf as part of our project close-out. You receive confirmation that your product is registered before we consider any job complete. This is a detail that routinely falls through the cracks with mail-order suppliers. We do not let that happen.
— Physical damage to the film surface (scratches, cuts, punctures)
— Unauthorized modifications to the electrical system or film by a third party
— Use of ammonia-based or abrasive cleaning products
— Sustained water exposure beyond normal interior humidity
— Operating voltage outside specification from non-approved controllers or wiring changes
Normal wear, UV exposure within the film's rated environment, and any defect not attributable to the above are covered without qualification.
Every Desert Smart Glass project is scoped and quoted individually — pricing is based on your specific glass surfaces, number of zones, integration requirements, and the film product selected. We do not publish per-square-foot pricing on our website because no two installations are identical, and a number without context does more harm than good at the planning stage.
What we can tell you about the investment level: smart film is a permanent architectural upgrade to your glass, and it is typically comparable in investment to a premium motorized shade system for the same coverage — with no ongoing mechanical maintenance, no visible hardware, and a rated lifespan of 15–20 years.
Our payment structure is straightforward and standard for custom residential installations at this level: 50% at signed proposal to secure your installation slot and initiate material ordering, and 50% on completion at the time of final commissioning and your walkthrough.
We do not invoice the balance until every zone is functioning to specification and you have confirmed the installation meets your expectations. You do not pay the second half for a job that isn't finished to your satisfaction.
Unlike motorized shades, smart film is a permanent architectural improvement to the glass itself — it stays with the home when you sell. It photographs beautifully, demonstrates immediately during a showing, and is rare in the current Scottsdale and Paradise Valley resale inventory. At the $3M–$10M level, homes that sell fastest and at the highest price per square foot are consistently the most thoughtfully automated — and smart glass is the feature that differentiates above the Control4/Lutron baseline every buyer already expects.
